Standard Print Sizes and Placement: Getting Proportions Right on Garments

A practical guide to positioning your artwork correctly on t-shirts, hoodies and workwear.

When you look at a visual mockup on a computer monitor, a t-shirt appears perfectly flat. The artwork sits neatly in the centre, the proportions look flawless, and the fabric appears smooth. The reality of the factory floor is quite different. Human bodies are curved, garments drape over shoulders, and fabric moves as the wearer goes about their day.

Deciding where to place your artwork and how big it should be is just as important as the design itself. A beautifully designed logo will look amateurish if it is printed too low on the stomach or wraps awkwardly under the armpit. Getting the proportions right requires an understanding of standard print sizes and how artwork behaves on a physical garment.

Over years of printing workwear, promotional merchandise and retail clothing, we have established standard placement rules that work for the vast majority of garments. Understanding these guidelines will help you prepare your artwork correctly and avoid common pitfalls.

The left chest placement is the absolute standard for corporate workwear, uniforms and subtle brand merchandise. It is professional, visible, and sits naturally on the wearer. However, a very common mistake is making this logo too large.

The standard width for a left chest logo is usually between 7cm and 10cm. The exact size you should choose depends heavily on the shape of your artwork. A ten centimetre wide horizontal logo looks perfectly normal, but a ten centimetre circular logo will look like a heavy dinner plate on your chest. For square or circular designs, keeping the width closer to 7cm or 8cm yields a much better result.

Placement is also critical. The logo must sit on the chest muscle, not down near the ribs or pushed too far to the side. As a general rule, printers determine the placement by drawing an imaginary line straight down from the point where the collar meets the shoulder seam, and intersecting it with a horizontal line drawn from the bottom of the armhole. If the design is pushed too far wide, it will disappear into the folds of the sleeve when the garment is worn.

Full Front Prints

Full front prints are highly popular for retail brands, band merchandise, and promotional event shirts. These designs are meant to be bold and capture attention. The standard width for a full front print is typically between 25cm and 28cm.

A frequent error when setting up full front artwork is pushing the design too far down the shirt. If a print starts too low on the chest, it ends up sitting on the stomach rather than the upper torso. The top of a full front print should generally sit about three to four fingers below the bottom of the front collar.

You must also consider the physical weight of the print. If you are using screen printing or DTF transfers for a massive, solid block of colour, that area of the shirt will not breathe well. A solid 30cm square of ink can create a heavy, sweaty patch on the wearer. Wherever possible, it is best to incorporate negative space into large front designs so the fabric can breathe.

Full Back Prints and the Hoodie Problem

Back prints offer the largest canvas on a garment and are excellent for staff uniforms where you need the team to be easily identifiable from behind. The standard width here is slightly larger than the front, often ranging between 28cm and 32cm.

The placement should sit squarely across the shoulder blades. If a back print drops too low, it looks like a manufacturing mistake and draws the eye to the lower back rather than the shoulders. Typically, the top of the design should sit roughly 10cm below the back collar.

However, this rule changes entirely when you are printing on hoodies. If you print a standard back placement on a hoodie, the resting hood will completely obscure the top half of your artwork. To solve this, the print must be lowered significantly so that it sits entirely beneath the hood drop. This is a crucial detail to remember if you are ordering a mixed batch of t-shirts and hoodies with the same back design.

Scaling Across Different Garment Sizes

One of the biggest practical challenges in garment printing is scaling. When you order a batch of shirts ranging from Extra Small to Double Extra Large, you have to decide on the physical size of the print.

In screen printing, setting up a job requires burning a physical mesh screen for each colour in the design. To keep costs down, most production runs use a single print size that fits the smallest garment in the order. If you optimise your artwork to be 28cm wide so it looks great on a Medium, that same print might hit the side seams of an Extra Small shirt. Conversely, on a Double Extra Large, a 28cm print might look a little lost in the middle of the fabric.

DTF transfers offer slightly more flexibility, but you still need to print physical transfers at specific dimensions. If you want perfectly scaled prints for both extremes of your sizing range, you will need to split the order. This means creating a smaller version of the artwork for the Small and Medium garments, and a larger version for the Large and Extra Large garments. This approach yields the best visual results, but it does increase setup costs and production time.

Sleeves and the Nape of the Neck

Secondary branding locations are a great way to add premium details to your garments. The nape of the neck, situated just below the back collar, is very popular for small, subtle logos. The standard size for this location is usually between 5cm and 8cm wide. It is best to keep designs in this area simple and horizontal.

Sleeve prints are another excellent option. For short sleeve t-shirts, a small logo of about 5cm to 8cm wide works best, positioned centrally on the outer edge of the sleeve. Long sleeve shirts and hoodies offer the option of running text down the arm. When printing down a sleeve, the maximum length is usually dictated by the printing platen, but typically sits around 35cm to 40cm long.

Avoiding Seams, Zips and Pockets

We frequently receive requests to print directly over the front zip of a hoodie, across the thick seams of a jacket, or right up against the edge of a kangaroo pocket. While this is occasionally technically possible, it is rarely a good idea.

Printing over a zip creates a physical gap in the artwork and causes ink to build up unevenly on the metal or plastic teeth. This leads to a messy finish and a print that is highly likely to crack or peel over time. Similarly, printing too close to the seams of a kangaroo pocket is problematic. The print head or screen frame needs a flat, even surface to press against. The thick bulk of a seam prevents the equipment from sitting flat, resulting in blurred edges or incomplete ink coverage.

Always leave a safe margin of at least two centimetres between your artwork and any seams, zips, or pockets.
