What is DTF printing and how does it work?
A plain guide to direct to film printing, what it is good at, where it struggles, and how to prepare artwork for it.

Direct to film printing, usually shortened to DTF, has become one of the most widely used ways to put full colour designs onto clothing. If you have ordered printed garments in the last few years, there is a good chance at least some of them were produced this way.
This guide explains the process in plain terms, where it works well, where another method makes more sense, and what we need from you so that the artwork prints cleanly.
What direct to film printing actually is
DTF is a transfer method. Instead of printing straight onto the garment, the design is printed onto a sheet of transfer film, then moved onto the fabric with a heat press.
The sequence looks like this.
- The artwork is printed onto a clear film using water based pigment inks. Colour is laid down first, then a layer of white ink behind it.
- While the ink is still wet, a fine adhesive powder is applied to the printed area. The powder sticks only where there is ink.
- The film is cured with gentle heat so that the powder melts into a smooth, slightly tacky layer.
- The film is positioned on the garment and pressed with heat and pressure.
- Once pressed, the film is peeled away and the design stays on the fabric.
Because the white ink sits behind the colour, the design keeps its brightness on dark garments as well as light ones. That single detail is the reason DTF replaced a lot of older transfer methods.
Why it suits so many jobs
Full colour with no extra cost per colour. A photograph, a gradient and a two colour logo all print in the same pass. There is no separate screen or setup for each colour, so a detailed design does not cost more to print than a simple one.
It works across most fabrics. Cotton, polyester and blends all accept a DTF transfer, which matters when one order mixes t shirts, hoodies, softshell jackets and polyester sportswear. A method that only worked on cotton would need a second process for the rest of the order.
It is efficient for small runs. Because there is no screen to make, small quantities and one off pieces are practical. Ten shirts with ten different names is an ordinary job rather than an awkward one.
Fine detail holds up. Thin lines, small text and soft edges survive the process better than they do with heavier methods, which is useful for logos that contain small print or fine outlines.
Where DTF is not the right answer
No method is best at everything, and it is worth being honest about the limits.
Very large quantities. Once you are printing hundreds of identical garments in a small number of colours, screen printing usually becomes both cheaper per piece and faster to run.
Very large solid areas. A design that covers most of the front of a garment leaves a large area of transfer on the fabric. It works, but it changes how the garment feels and drapes compared with a print that sits in the fabric.
Fabrics that resist heat or pressure. Some technical finishes, heavily textured knits and coated fabrics do not respond well to a heat press. These need to be assessed piece by piece rather than assumed.
A print you cannot feel at all. DTF sits on top of the fabric, so you can feel it with your fingertips. If the brief is a print with no hand feel at all, a different process is the better fit.
How the print behaves in wear
A well pressed DTF transfer is stretchy enough to move with a jersey fabric and holds colour through repeated washing. The things that shorten its life are almost always mechanical rather than chemical: high heat in a tumble dryer, ironing directly over the print, and washing the garment inside out being skipped.
Our care advice for printed garments is simple. Wash cool, wash inside out, skip the tumble dryer where you can, and never iron over the print itself. That advice costs nothing and makes a visible difference over a year of wear.
Preparing artwork so it prints well
Most print problems are artwork problems, and nearly all of them are avoidable.
Send vector where you can. An AI, EPS, PDF or SVG file can be scaled to any size without losing quality. This is the ideal starting point for logos and text.
If the file is a bitmap, send it large. A PNG with a transparent background at 300 dpi at the size it will actually be printed is fine. A small web image stretched up to print size is not, and it will look soft no matter how carefully it is printed.
Remove the background properly. A transparent background means transparent, not white. A white box behind a logo will print as a white box.
Keep small text sensible. Very thin strokes and very small point sizes can close up. If a piece of text has to be readable, give it a little more weight.
Tell us the print size, not just the design. A logo that is 8 cm wide across the chest and the same logo at 25 cm are different jobs visually. Stating the intended width removes the guesswork.
Choosing between methods
If you are weighing DTF against another process, the questions that matter are quantity, number of colours, fabric and finish. A short run of full colour designs on mixed fabrics points firmly at DTF. A long run of a one or two colour logo on cotton t shirts points at screen printing. A dense stitched badge on a jacket points at embroidery.

Common questions
Is DTF printing durable?
A correctly pressed DTF transfer holds colour through repeated washing. Wash cool and inside out, avoid the tumble dryer where possible, and never iron directly over the print.
Does DTF work on polyester as well as cotton?
Yes. It works across cotton, polyester and blends, which is why it suits orders that mix t shirts, hoodies and polyester sportswear.
Is there a minimum quantity for DTF printing?
No screen has to be made, so small quantities and even single pieces are practical. Larger runs of a simple one or two colour design are often better suited to screen printing.
What artwork should I send?
Vector files (AI, EPS, PDF or SVG) are ideal. A high resolution PNG with a genuinely transparent background at 300 dpi at print size also works. Tell us the intended print width as well.
