Why AI artwork is not always suitable for print

AI images can look superb on a phone and still fail on a garment. Here is why, and what to send instead.

AI image tools have made it very easy to produce something that looks like finished artwork in a few seconds. We are asked to print AI generated designs almost every week, and some of them work well. Many do not, and the reason has very little to do with taste.

Print is a physical process. Ink or transfer film has to sit on fabric, and every edge, shadow and background has to survive being pressed, worn and washed. An image made for a screen is not automatically ready for that.

AI tools output pixels, not print files

Almost all popular AI image tools return a flat raster image, usually a JPG or PNG, at a fixed pixel size. Common outputs are around 1024 by 1024 pixels.

That is plenty for a website or a social post. On a garment it is limiting. A chest print roughly 25 cm wide needs about 2950 pixels across to sit at 300 dots per inch at its finished size. A 1024 pixel image stretched to that width is being asked to invent nearly three times the detail it holds, and the result is soft edges and visible blocks in the fine areas.

Vector artwork, the kind produced in illustration software and supplied as AI, EPS, PDF or SVG, has no fixed resolution and can be scaled to any size cleanly. That is why logos are usually drawn as vectors, and why an AI raster version of a logo is a step backwards.

Backgrounds are the most common problem

Ask an AI tool for a logo or a mascot and it will usually give you a picture of one, sitting on a background. Even when that background looks white or plain, it is part of the image.

On a coloured garment, that background prints as a visible panel or halo around the design. Removing it afterwards is possible, but on AI output the edges are frequently soft, feathered or blended into the subject, so a clean cut is not always achievable without redrawing parts of the design.

Some tools now offer transparent output. That helps, but it does not solve soft or blended edges on its own.

Invented detail does not survive the press

AI images are generated, not constructed. They tend to contain small marks that look intentional on a screen and become awkward once printed at size: text that is nearly but not quite readable, gradients that band, tiny hairline details that disappear, and shadows that print as grey smudges on a dark garment.

Very fine lines are a particular issue. A line that is a single pixel wide on screen can be too thin to hold reliably in a transfer, so it either drops out or comes through broken.

Text is rarely reliable

AI tools have improved at rendering words, but they still produce letters that are subtly wrong: uneven spacing, inconsistent shapes for repeated letters, or characters that are close to a real typeface without being one. Once printed at 20 cm across, those flaws are obvious and cannot be fixed by scaling.

If a design carries words, the words should be set in real type. That also lets us adjust size and spacing so the wording holds at the printed size.

Rights and originality

An AI image can closely resemble an existing brand, character or photographer's work. We will not knowingly print something that copies a protected design, so if artwork looks like an existing brand or a well known character we will raise it before production.

This matters most for anything you intend to sell rather than wear internally.

What does work

AI is genuinely useful earlier in the process. It is good for exploring layout ideas, moods, colour combinations and rough composition before anyone commits time to drawing.

The strongest results we see follow this pattern.

  1. Use the AI image as a reference, not as the final file.
  2. Have the chosen idea redrawn as vector artwork, with real type and clean edges.
  3. Keep the design to solid, well separated shapes wherever the garment is dark.
  4. Check the design at its actual printed size on paper before approving it.

What to send us

Send the best version you have, and tell us where it came from. If it is AI generated, say so, because it changes what we check.

Ideally we want vector artwork as AI, EPS, PDF or SVG. If only a pixel image exists, send the largest original file rather than a screenshot or a version pulled from social media, and send it with a transparent background if possible.
