What you see on screen will not necessarily work in print
Why a design that looks perfect on your phone can come back looking different on fabric, and how to judge it properly.

"It looked brighter on my screen" is one of the most common comments we hear after a first sample. It is a fair observation, and it is almost always explained by the difference between a screen and a printed garment rather than by a mistake.
Understanding that difference makes approvals much easier, because you learn what to trust on screen and what to check another way.
Screens make light, fabric reflects it
A phone or monitor produces colour by emitting light. Its brightest possible colour is a lit pixel in a dark room, which is why vivid blues, greens and neons look so intense.
A garment has no light of its own. It can only reflect what falls on it, so the strongest colour it can ever show depends on the room you are standing in. The same design will read differently under shop lighting, office strip lighting and Maltese sunshine.
That is why highly saturated colours, especially bright blue, deep orange and fluorescent shades, usually appear a little more restrained once printed. Nothing has gone wrong. The colour has moved into what ink and fabric can physically achieve.
Two different colour systems
Screens work in RGB, mixing red, green and blue light. Printing works with a limited set of pigments laid onto a surface. Some RGB colours simply have no exact printed equivalent, and the closest achievable colour is used instead.
Two practical consequences follow.
- Bright, glowing colours shift the most. Neutrals, blacks, greys and muted tones shift the least.
- Two screens rarely agree with each other in the first place. An uncalibrated laptop, a phone in night mode and a warm office monitor will each show your design differently, so "the colour on my screen" is not a single fixed target.
If a colour has to be exact, for example a brand colour, give us the reference rather than the appearance. A Pantone reference or a printed sample we can match to is far more reliable than a screenshot.
Fabric changes the result too
Ink and transfer film sit on a woven or knitted surface, not on smooth paper. That surface has texture and its own colour, and both influence the finished look.
- On a dark garment, a white underbase is needed before colour is laid down. That layer affects how bright the colours above it appear.
- On a heather or melange fabric, the flecks in the cloth show through lighter parts of a design and slightly mute them.
- Coarse fabrics such as canvas and some workwear soften very fine detail simply because the surface is uneven.
- A washed or worn garment reflects light differently from a new one.
Size on screen is not size on the garment
A design viewed at full screen looks bold and confident. The same design at 8 cm on a polo chest can look timid, and at 30 cm across a T shirt it can look overwhelming.
Zoom level also hides problems. Fine lines, small text and thin gaps between shapes all look fine when the image fills your monitor and can close up or drop out at the real printed size.
The most useful check costs nothing. Print the design on plain paper at its actual finished size, hold it against a garment you already own, and look at it from about two metres away. Almost every sizing and legibility problem shows up immediately.
Dark garments, light garments
The same artwork rarely works equally well on both. A design with dark outlines disappears on a black garment, and a design built around a white background needs rethinking rather than simply moving.
Where a design has to run across both, it is usually better to supply or approve two versions, one adjusted for light fabric and one for dark, than to compromise on one file for everything.
How to judge a design properly
- Look at the design at its finished size, on paper, not at screen size.
- View it in daylight as well as under indoor lighting.
- Assume vivid colours will read slightly softer once printed.
- Give brand colours as a reference rather than as an on screen appearance.
- Ask for a sample when colour accuracy really matters, particularly for a large or repeating order.
